Interview: Deepankar Dey on playing the Protagonist in Upcoming Bengali Thriller Sesh Anko

On the sets of Director Tathagata Banerjee’s Debut Film Sesh Anko, Team Sholoana Bangaliana caught up with veteran actor Deepankar Dey to know more about Pranoy Dasgupta, the lawyer that he plays in this gripping thriller. Excerpts…

Sholoana Bangaliana: Hello and Welcome to Sholoana Bangaliana.. You will be essaying a very important role in this New Kolkata Bengali Movie Sesh Anko; please tell us something about the character you play in this film?

Deepankar Dey: The character that I play in this movie, Pranoy Dasgupta is a retired criminal lawyer who is otherwise a very flashy person with an extravagant lifestyle; he enjoys playing golf, drinking expensive liquor, clubbing, partying and indulging in everything luxurious. In due course of events one of his ex-colleagues (played by June Maliah) approaches him with a case and literally compels him to take it up thus bringing him back to the field that he was a master at. Once he takes up the case, he starts investigating things himself and gathers some concrete evidences that decide the fate of the case which culminates in a grand and nail biting courtroom drama.

Sholoana Bangaliana: This is a very different kind of character portrayal that you been entrusted with, how does it feel and what homework did you really have to do in order to prepare for the role?

Deepankar Dey: Yes it is different indeed and it definitely feels great to be playing such a pivotal role in fast paced thriller. I however feel that had I been given little more time to gel with the role, it would have become easier for me. Specially, the court scenes, one needs to have good command over the flow of proceedings to be able to give the best shot in such court room dramas but I had very less time; nevertheless we are working on it on the go and shall definitely deliver the best.

Sholoana Bangaliana: You are working with a lot of young talents; specially you have a lot of scenes with Parno, how was the experience of working with these dynamic young actors?

Deepankar Dey: Well yes, I have a lot of scenes with Parno (plays Raina the female protagonist) as well as Debleena; working with them has always been a great experience and it is so in this movie too. Parno specially has improved a lot in terms of her Bangla pronunciations as previously when we used to work together in serials she used to struggle a lot with her Bangla.

Sholoana Bangaliana: What would you say is the USP of this film?

Deepankar Dey: This film, though a thriller, has a very solid element to it and cannot be dismissed as just any other ‘Goenda Golpo’. The treatment is very racy and one that will keep the audience riveted to the plot, which all the more should be the reason for its success. Rest is all Luck and God’s grace!

Sholoana Bangaliana: This is your first project with director Tathagata Banerjee, what do you have to say about his style of working and his conduct on the whole?

Deepankar Dey: The only thing I wanted was a little more time as I wanted to really get into the skin of the character but then the schedule was so tight that we had to make way. But otherwise, Tathagata is a very refined director, his style is effortless and praise worthy and it is great to work with him. Just that he is too quiet a guy, so much so that at times we really have to egg him and ask about the next shot.

Sholoana Bangaliana: What do you have to say about the film’s script. When you were approached with it did you suggest changes or take it as it was presented?

Deepankar Dey: No, the script is just perfect and I did not need to suggest changes. Even the script writer Sanjib Banerji is a fine chap and we make it a point to sit together and discuss scenes every day and in course make and break things to adjust to the flow of the film.

Sholoana Bangaliana: You are working with Samdarshi for the first time in this movie, what do you have to say about his skills as an actor?

Deepankar Dey: Yes he is playing a tough cop in this movie and has a completely new look. Just that we haven’t yet had scenes together, so that close interaction has yet not happened, nevertheless I have seen his earlier films and know that he is wonderful actor.

With a marvelous star cast that includes actors like Deepankar Dey, Parno Mitra, June Maliah, Samdarshi Dutta, Mir and others and a gripping plot, Director Tathagata Banerjee’s Upcoming Bengali Film Sesh Anko is sure to bring the team accolades and set the MacNeill Media coffers overflowing. Our Best Wishes with the Team!
