Be it ‘My Brother Nikhil’ or ‘I Am’, Onir’s films are not the typical commercial masala films. They have some message to relate to the audiences. His next film is titled Shab and features Arpita Chatterjee, Raveena Tandon and newcomer Ashish Bisht in pivotal roles. The film is set against the backdrop of the South Delhi fashion industry. Onir wrote the script of this film in 2001, and it is incidentally his first script.
Most of the films made on Delhi have captured the lifestyle and essence of Chadni Chowk, Janakpuri or Pahargunj but with Shab, Onir plans to delve deep into the lifestyle of the upmarket Delhi, precisely areas in South Delhi like Hauz Khas or Lajpat Nagar. The main plot of the film Shab is about an aspiring model played by Ashish who comes to Delhi from Mussoorie. Arpita plays the role of Raina who is a waitress by profession and woks in a café at Hauz Khas. Raveena Tandon plays the role of a fashion diva in the film.
Arpita Chatterjee, who shall soon be seen with her husband Prsasenjit Chatterjee in Upcoming Bengali Film Force was a sudden choice that Onir made for Shab. Onir had gone to Prasenjit Chatterjee’s house to meet him regarding a film when he happened to see Arpita. He found her absolutely gorgeous and could immediately see her as his heroine Raina in a smart pixie cut; thankfully enough, when approached Arpita did not even think twice before saying yes to the new look and role. Sumit Israni of Geetanjali Salon in New Delhi has styled Arpita’s hair for the new look that she dons in the film.
Raveena Tandon’s role was initially to be played by Sangeeta Bijlani. The director felt that after the long exile that Sangeeta has been in, she would make for an interesting choice. But after a few workshops, he realized that she was not comfortable with some scenes and it was not working out the way he had wanted it to. His next choice was thus Raveena Tandon, who is a powerful actress in her own right.
Dialogues for Shab have been penned down by Adhiraj Singh who is also a Graphic Novelist, Ashish Bisht’s styling has been done by Padma Shri Awardee Fashion designer Wendell Rodricks.
Shab is currently in its third schedule of shoot and Onir along with the entire team comprising seems to be visibly excited with the way things are shaping up .
