Kalindi Darpan Socio-Cultural Organization recently organized Smaran 2016 on the fond memories of the Kathak Queen Sitara Devi on her 2nd death anniversary.
Not many of us know that Sitara Devi had a very close connection with Bengal. She was born and brought up in Kolkata. She was very fluent in Bengali and fond of makeup. At a very tender age she got a chance to perform in front of Gurudev Rabindranath Tagore in Shantiniketan. She joined film industry, earned adequate stardom but left it. She made her film debut with Usha Haran in 1940 and went on appear in films like Roti, Anjali, Mother India and so on. She performed at the Royal Albert Hall, got the Sangeet Natak Akademi Award, Padma Shree, Kalidas Samman but she refused to take Padma Bhusan.
The ace dancer Alokananda Roy was felicitated by the name of Sitara Devi as Chief Guest with two other special exponents as special guests namely Chitra Bishwanathan from Mumbai and Saraswati Rajathesh from Bangalore.
Smaran 2016 featured the performances of exponents from Delhi- Amit Khinchi (disciple of Pt. Rajendra Gangani) and Subhi Johri (student of Pt. Jay Kishan Maharaj). The main performances were offered by the grandsons of Sitara Devi namely Vishal Krishna (Kathak exponent) and Kushal Krishna (Tabla exponent) from Benaras. There were many other performers from Kolkata like Anasua Majumdar, Gargi Mukherjee, Rudrani Konar with their exciting presentation.
