Suman Mukhopadhyay’s “Man of the Heart” brings to life Lalon Phokir on stage


Man of the Heart

Lalon Phakir, from the district of Kushtia in Bangladesh is one unique musician and storyteller who has been ruling the hearts of many as the King of Bauls. “Man of the Heart” is one such project that talks about the life and works of the Baul King. The documentary drama is directed by Suman Mukhopadhyay with the aid of Satyanki Banerjee, Daminee Basu, Kamalika Banerjee, Nazrul Shah, Amlan Choudhury, Joyraj Bhattacharya and written and acted by Sudipto Chatterjee was staged on 26th March 2013 in Academy Of Fine Arts.

The drama is based on the life of Lalon Phokir and in the backdrop the time is also beautifully portrayed. According to Suman Mukhopadhyay, the play was conjured up at least 15 years back but it took pretty long a time to get executed. The perfect blending of the superb live performance, creativity and academic research has further added to the technical finesse of the play. Baul sangeet has lately emerged as the most experimented forms of and the play has successfully blended the course of academic research, music and live performances with the help of this play. Daminee Basu, who is quite a television friendly face today, has done a commendable job. After staging Shakespeare’s “King Lear” and Tagore’s Bisarjan, Mukhopadhyay has taken a desperate attempt to stage “Man of the Heart” (which is already quite famous abroad) once again in Kolkata after 2007 and 2008.

Sudipto Chatterjee, the illustrious performer has grabbed due accolades from the critics for this particular act. Each and every part of the play was crafted to mesmerize the theatre lovers and the creative race. This is probably the best of the creations of Mukhopadhyay till date. The philosophies that are widely delivered through songs are genuinely thought provoking and this has made the play sweep through the world of literary fame with ease. As music forms the base of the play, the syncopation is done flawlessly to explore the divinity of melody and rhythm. On the whole the saga of Lalon Phokir, painted by Suman Mukhopadhyay has lucratively shaped a landmark in the history of theatre.

How the money of common investors are bartered with the perpetrators of terrorism for transfer of funds in TAX HAVEN? How closely the business of Chit Funds, Money Laundering and Terrorism Financing are intertwined.

Our story explores all these hard facts with subtlety through the characters of Raman (Victor Banerjee), Sen Sharma (Soumitra Chaterjee), Bhuvan (Priyam), Nusrat (Bidita Bag), Arvind (Rajesh Sharma) and others.

Glimpses from Shambhu Nath Nritya Utsav 2013



The Shambhu Nath Nritya Utsav 2013 was held in Kala Mandir Kolkata on the 8th and 9th of March, 2013. It was a 2 day artistic extravaganza that also saw the presence of celebrities like Dolon Roy.

  Smt. Tanushree Shankar and her trope also graced the occasion with a grand performance.

Right from the works of Tagore to some mesmerizing Santhali Dance performances, all formed a part of this festival.

The main highlight of the event was the dance performance depicting Delhi Gang Rape Victim Nirbhaya’s plight and the general wrongs that have now become rampant in the society. As the event commenced on International Women’s Day i.e March 8th, this attempt to coax the society to protect and respect women was highly appreciated by the audience present.

Such beautifully organized events only keep the spirit of Kolkata alive!
